The Romanian IT industry seen through the eyes of Keshav Murugesh , CEO at WNS Global Services – part II
Keshav Murugesh, WNS Global Services CEO – interview , part II :
Why is China not such a strong player in the IT industry
India represents a real force in the IT industry, but the single more populated country, China, failed in making a statement in this field so far – and it’s being known mainly for the severe internet censorship. Why is China not such a strong player in the IT industry?
“The answer is simple : due to its poor foreign language skills, English in particular. Also because this state has focused more on the production of goods and not services.India focuses on services and the government supports these sectors through a series of programs. As a result, young people often choose to follow this field.” Murugesh sais
India vs Romania – a small comparison
If we are to look at the IT sector, we can find similarities but also major differences between the two countries. To India’s advantage we have a great number of young graduates, but Romania has higher wages and maintains its position as an essential market for the outsourcing business.
“We might never reach the point when we’ll have 10.000 employees in Romania or Poland but it’s a real possibility that we could grow from 500 to 1000.Romania has 200.000 graduates per year, India has over 3 milion.Furthermore, the entry level salary in India reaches 4000 dollars per year, whereas in Romania reaches 7.500 dollars”
“Even though many things are cheap in India, with the entry level wage life isn’t that easy because the inflation rate usually reaches 10% , in Bombay we can find the world’s most expensive proprieties and private schools are very expensive” explains Murugesh
“The IT industry has created a successful lifestyle not only for those working in this particular field but also for those working in related industries such as infrastructure or retail. We are talking about an industry that helps other fields develop. The IT sector will have a business figure of over 300 billion dollars in India in the next 7 years, an amount that will increase three times from the present figure.” The CEO added
Apart from India, we can also mention Sri Lanka, with similar wages but with less graduates/year.Yet the star country is, without a doubt, The Philippines, a country with 65 million inhabitants, where you can find higher salaries due to the large number of professionals with an American structure.
Keshav Murugesh attended the annual conference in Bucharest, conference dedicated to the service industry in Romania, organized by the Business Services Leaders Association .
