Sharing – 5 tips to bear in mind when starting your career
Whether you are a new graduate or on the verge of changing your career , starting this process takes a lot of energy and time. Here are 5 tips to share with you and that can be shared with others, learned from my own experience over the years:
1.Learn to be patient!
Do a little soul searching before starting to apply for online positions –do not underestimate the power of your first job – find out what you are really interested in, what your affinities are and see what domain would suit you better. Indeed, one cannot deny the fact that the economy has modified over the years and jobs can be changed easily but a mature decision taken an the beginning of one’s career can positively influence the general outcome. If the correct path is chosen from the beginning , the road to success can be much smoother! “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved” – William Jennings Bryan
2.Don’t judge everything from a financial perspective!
Recent graduate and with an immense desire to be successful on your own? We’ve all been there and it’s a great feeling but more than once we can be blinded by the power of money!Don’t take the first job that comes at hand just because the monetary compensation is great! Think ahead – will that position get you where you really want to be? Be mature and shape your professional life from the beginning! An internship in the domain you love may pay less than a job in a field you don’t, but will that be satisfactory in the years to come? “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” – Confucius
3.Always start with a positive attitude – set your mind to success!
Nothing is better than self motivation! In order for others to believe in you, first you have to be confident in your own strengths! Know your strong and weak points – boost the first ones and try to minimize the latters!Always be self aware and in constant desire to improve. That kind of attitude is desired in all the aspects of your life , not only the professional one. “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy” Norman Vincent Peale
4.Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!
How can we learn otherwise? Keep in mind that everybody takes uninspired decisions once in a while –it’s normal and sometimes healthy – for how can we be better at something if we don’t learn from our or others mistakes?Experience shapes us as individuals and all the great minds behind successful businesses have , at some point taken a wrong turn. It’s only natural. The important thing is to own your choices, to learn and overcome , to not lose focus and why not – have a laugh about it! “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new” Albert Einstein
5.Create your personal spider – web !
Not literally – but be sure you create your own network : your colleagues and friends, your family and acquaintances may represent the key to success! They can be the connection to a new job,or perhaps business partners in the future!Pay attention to their ideas and personal view, keep alert and be prepared to learn something new!A different perspective can sometimes be exactly what you need and what you seek for.Last but not least , remember that networking is a two way street – be ready to give something in return, help somebody else or share your experience. “Networking is marketing. Marketing yourself, marketing your uniqueness, marketing what you stand for.” Christine Comaford-Lynch
