Secret steps towards professional success
Before diving into the lecture of the below article, ask yourself what “Professional Success” really means to you and if you feel you have it at the moment. Close your eyes and answer that question in your mind. And let it have an echo. Give your answer the freedom it needs. Meditate upon it. And maybe, at the end of the lecture, you will have the responses you need…
Failure? I call it experience
“I bought a company in the mid-’90s called Dexter Shoe and paid $400 million for it. And it went to zero. And I gave about $400 million worth of Berkshire stock, which is probably now worth $400 billion. But I’ve made lots of dumb decisions. That’s part of the game” – Warren Buffet
If only there was a successful person that had a clear road from the beginning, that made no mistake in his/her career and that reached the top without regretting anything! We need to fail from time to time in order to fully understand the importance of our struggle. For without failure – how can we learn? Do not be afraid to make mistakes! Every step we take, every decision we are faced with has its share of risk. It’s about taking it or being afraid of trying. And yes, it’s a cliché but it’s a meaningful one: you’ll regret the things you haven’t done rather the things you have done in life! Have the courage to dive forward, but always maintain your verticality, your clear mind, your goals and desires. And if you happen to fail – either by taking the wrong job offer that might not suit you that well, or perhaps taking a business opportunity that proved to be a dead end, always see it an experience! Learn from it, adjust, re-invent yourself and teach others at your turn!
Family cannot be chosen. For all others around us, we have that option
Focus on people that are better than you, people that you admire and that can become mentors. Be selective – you have that power! Choose your associates carefully and look for behaviors that are better than yours. Only by doing so you make sure the road you follow will drift in that direction as well. Let go of grudge or any personal vendetta and learn to admire those that have succeeded in key positions – see in them an endless source of inspiration. Try to understand what took them further, what drove them to achieve success, what were the steps they took. Learn from all and create your own personal path. Be attentive! Is it the hard work that lead them to the top? Work harder! Do you feel they had a key person that gave them a helping hand? Learn how to be proficient in strategic networking at your turn! Look around you and leave your comfort zone behind! Learn how to adapt, be a skilled communicator! Your chance could be found in places and people you never dreamed of!
Disappointed? Every cloud has a silver lining
“Frustration, although quite painful at times, is a very positive and essential part of success” Bo Bennett
Plans haven’t turned the way you wanted them to? The job you currently hold is not the perfect image you’ve set up in your mind years ago when you started your career? Perhaps colleagues and managers are not the leaders you desired? The change stands in you and you alone. Take the best of what you have and turn yourself towards other horizons! The world is yours and it holds so many opportunities! It’s never too late to start over, it’s never too late to take some time to re-discover yourself and find out what really motivates you and drives you towards! I’ve seen top managers that got out from the corporate world, leaving a very comfortable seat behind only because the image they were seeing in front of them was but a pale picture of the reality they dreamed and desired. I’ve seen employees shifting directions and changing departments only because they had the courage to admit to themselves that they wanted something else! I’ve seen people working harder and harder for a dream that sometimes seemed more and more distant – and all of them are bounded by the same values – they believed that every experience they had was to their own benefit and could be used in a constructive manner. They were taught and they were shaped in a certain manner that allowed them to use everything they had accumulated and build a new road ahead. It’s called using your resources to your own advantage and having the courage to start over again! You have it in you, just let go of your barriers and set it free!
By now you would have realized the title or the article was only a decoy. Secret steps towards success? There are none. It’s only personal experience, commitment and desire to overcome your fears. It’s all about your own way of seeing things, of reacting to others, of knowing what your limits are. It’s about how much you are willing to give to others, it’s about how you dosage your feelings and emotions. It’s about how you know to communicate and share. It’s about courage and risks and your own will. It’s about never giving up your dreams and staying true to yourself.
