Organizational culture – between education and manipulation

During my professional experience, from time to time, I interacted with students and even young children that, when faced with the well-known question “ what do you want to be when you grow up ?”,answered frankly and without hesitation that they wanted to work in a multinational company.

Could this be the result of a new trend?Do they perhaps answer like this because this is what they consider being “cool” due to the fact that this is what we face and see on a daily basis?Are we drawn towards this professional path because more and more companies develop their centers in Romania or is this what we really desire to become?

From my own perspective, the main ingredient that appeals to us and makes us want to work in such an environment is the company’s Organizational Culture,found in many foreign enterprises but lacking in Romanian firms.

As the rumor spreads, sooner or later everybody becomes aware that such companies provide all sort of benefits and programs  – appealing especially to young students or graduates who are looking for a positive work environment, a place where they can develop their knowledge and gain experience in their career.They desire to be rewarded properly for their work and wish their accomplishments were appreciated.

The concept of organizational culture is relatively new and is based on society itself. The foundation of this concept consists of a number of social factors, such as moral, ethic, attachment, level of satisfaction or performance criteria based on the employee’s involvement in his work.

This culture, also known as Corporate Culture gives meaning and direction to the employee’s daily behavior.It strengthens common beliefs and encourages the members to strive together in order to achieve a goal.One of the main advantages is the constant competition development , designed to effectively respond to external environment demands.

Nevertheless, one question rises : is this really desirable and is this what we really want to achieve? Could we, somehow unconsciously, follow the steps already prepared for us,towards some unrealistic purpose? Are we not faced with a small drop of company manipulation? How many of us really see things the same way as the enterprise does? And how is it really perceived – as education or manipulation?

One may say that each company offers a different package of benefits and has its own view towards the Corporate Culture but at a closer look all of them have a common base.All of these benefits are created in order to better stimulate the employee with the clear purpose that the later successfully meets the company’s expectations.

And yet ,to boost productivity,the employee should work for pleasure.He should be happy , creative and develop ideas for mutual benefit.But what about his perspectives?Is there a way , perhaps , to better stimulate such a person?Can the employer find something better than a package of common benefits shared with the other companies?

We can have as examples some companies that have developed packages for their employee’s personal  well being and sometimes personal delight : social committee,voice of the work force, wellness,CSR, etc.

Furthermore,we have rewards given after following performance criteria ,promotion and job rotation.

Each and every one of them has as purpose the employee’s involvement in activities that increase responsibility or include relaxation.

In addition to all of the above , we can also add the internal regulations found in a Multinational.This kind of structure cannot be found inside a limited liability company. Created especially to match the employee’s demands and desires it has common sense rules, simple and logic and that apply globally inside the firm.It simply means that all of the workers inside an institution follow the same path and the same rules,no exception whatsoever. We are all equal, no matter in what part of the world we live or work in.One of the main examples I can provide is the general term of  greeting : Mister,Misses and Madam are no longer used,we are all partners and have the same issues and as a result we feel more comfortable when addressing in a light manner to another colleague , even if he/she is a manager. At this point authority is earned from results and achievements.

Our own perception in regards to the corporate environment relates to the actual cultural understanding and last but not least to our own well established purpose.If we desire to develop our career in such a company, we can adopt their own point of views and benefit from mutual success.It’s a win win situation. Common principles and values ​​applied in a constructive way lead to achievement and satisfaction both personally and professionally. In the end, supporting the employees and offering them what they need  and desire can only mean efficiency and effectiveness.
